Child Attendance

Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your
child for success—both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you
help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits and avoid dangerous behavior.

How to prevent your child from missing school

You can help prevent your child missing school by:

  • making sure they understand the importance of good attendance and punctuality
  • making sure they understand the possible implications for both themselves and you as
a parent if they do not attend
  • taking an interest in their education - ask about school work and encourage them to get
    involved in school activities
  • discussing any problems they may have at school and letting their teacher or principal
know about anything that is causing concern no matter how small
  • not letting them take time off school for minor ailments

Stop Bullying

It’s a staggering statistic; especially considering the many ways bullying
can affect students. Targeted children often suffer from poor performance
in school, sleep issues, anxiety, and depression. We can create a classroom
climate that prevents bullying, but also put interventions in place that
stop the behavior in its beginning stages

  • Teach kindness and empathy.
  • Create opportunities for connection.
  • Identify ‘gateway behaviors.'
  • Use the arts to create context.
  • Minimize ‘concentric circles’ in schools.
  • Participate in simulations.

Practical Life in School

Practical Life activities are the activities of everyday life and they are involved
in all aspects of life. The child observes these activities in the environment and
gains knowledge through the real experience of how to accomplish life skills in
a purposeful way. These activities are cultural and specific to the child's time and
place. Practical life activities help give the child a sense of being and belonging,
established through participation in daily life with us. Through practical life,
the child learns about his culture and all about what it is to be human.

Homework Plan

A homework plan that outlines what the child will do to make
sure homework gets completed on time and well. It addresses
the issues that are specific to the child’s homework struggles.

  • Put a high priority on doing schoolwork.
  • Make a daily "To-Do" list.
  • Plan an overall schedule and keep a daily planner.
  • Make a list of undone tasks.
  • Divide large assignments into parts.
  • When you get short periods of time, work on short parts of longer assignments.
  • Learn to say "No" to people who try to interrupt you.
  • Do your most difficult school work during your best time of day.
  • Start big projects by doing "foot-wetter" tasks.
  • Follow the "Work First" rule. For people who hate time planning.
  • Ask for some help in managing your time.
